Job Title: Mechanical Engineer

Division: Light Assembly Division

Position Summary: Analyze customer requirements and develop competitive systems and station concepts. Document pertinent application engineering calculations and data. Responsible for high quality design work, accurate quoting, and effective machine build supervision and start-up.

Candidates with automotive and manufacturing skills in assembly, conveyor equipment, gauge equipment, robotic tooling, installation and field service, assembly system development, concept, design and detailing, and customer contact preferred. In addition, experience with part handling and feeder experience, transmission and engine test equipment, estimating cost for projects, and work well with other designers, control engineers, manufacturing, purchasing and outside designs and build resources helpful

Travel: 10% - 20% required per project.

Major Duties:

1. Responsible for the quality, cost effectiveness and timeliness of designs.

2. Responsible for conformance to design specifications.

3. Obtain necessary subcontract support and quotations.

4. Write proposal documents.

5. Meet quotation deadline requirements.

6. Support sales presentations.

a. Attend customer line up meetings.

b. Visit customer plants.

c. Participate in the development of sales presentation strategies and materials.

7. Review and completely understand customer requirements and specifications.

a. Terms and conditions.

b. Plant and corporate specifications.

c. Preferred vendor listings.

d. Part and assembly drawings and specifications.

e. Project specific quotation requirements.

8. Develop conceptual solutions and alternatives.

a. Process flow sequences and strategies.

b. Part handling and fixturing methods.

c. Station concepts, including operating sequences, timing charts.

d. Material flow with system layouts and arrangements.

9. Sketches, drawings and motion sheets as required to document the above, direct CAD work and provide presentation materials.

10. Initiate internal concept review and brainstorming meetings.

11. Obtain vendor quotations on critical equipment.

a. Develop technical specifications.

b. Identify qualified vendors.

c. Communicate with vendors via phone, fax and mail to provide line-ups, develop alternative solutions, receive and clarify quotations.

12. Develop quotations and proposals.

a. System and station descriptions.

b. Specification responses.

c. Price breakdowns.

d. Terms and conditions.

13. Identify and resolve problems.

a. Work with technical and commercial experts as required.

b. Obtain outside/vendor technical assistance.

c. Alert management to critical unresolved issues in a timely manner.

14. Maintain accurate project documentation.

15. Obtain final pricing and delivery decisions.

16. Finalize and transmit the proposal on schedule.

17. Ultimately responsible for the technical quality and commercial success of assigned projects.

18. Understands customer specifications and objective of the project.

19. Establish and execute the time-line for the project per the customer requirements.

20. Adhere to the project budget.

21. Capable of communicating to the various divisions (electrical, mechanical), in the company, and ensuring their understanding of the tasks at hand.

22. Interface with and provide support to all operational departments including Sales, Service and Applications.

23. Address all of the customer concerns and requirements.

24. Regular reporting of project progress and status to the customer and Hirata management.

25. Manage supplier and subcontractors relations on the project.

26. Participate on all the meetings regarding the project execution and progress.

27. Responsible for the design, manufacturing, assembly, debug, try-out, run-off, teardown, shipment, installation, start-up, and buyoff for all assigned projects.

28. Responsible for the delivery of all the as built drawings, manuals, and documentation to the customer.

29. Manage customer change orders.

30. Conduct all project meetings.

31. Review the overall performance of the project with departmental managers, and provide input on how Hirata can make improvements for future projects.

32. Responsible for collecting all payments from customers.

33. Serve as the Mechanical Project Engineer on projects as needed.

Required Skills:

1. A bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.

2. 5+ years of experience designing assembly machines.

3. 5+ years working for a company that sells assembly machines.

4. 5+ years quoting assembly machines.

5. Must have 5+ years of experience with AutoCAD.

6. Must have 5+ years of Solidworks

7. Must be located within commuting distance of Indianapolis, IN.

8. Must be experienced in designing systems around power and free conveyance, dials, indexing tables, walking beams and other forms of transport.

9. Must have a wide variety of experience with different types of assembly machines (fastening, pick/place, testing, feeding).

10. Must project a professional appearance and attitude.

11. Must have good customer relation skills.

12. Must possess superior organizational skills.

13. Good communicator-presentation and technical writing skills.
