Mechanical Field Service Technician Engineer
Travel: 15-20%, based on assigned project
Summary:
The Field Service Engineer works in conjunction with Sales, Quoting, Engineering, Build, and Documentation Departments in the conception, assembly, de-bug, and customer validation processes of all Hirata manufactured and purchased equipment. The work will be at both Hirata manufacturing facilities and customer locations. Major Duties:
• Report to the Service Department Manager for project assignments and to report on daily activity progress and responsibilities
• Work closely with the engineering department and build department in machine de-bug, validation and commission
• Provide assistance to the sales and quoting departments in evaluating future projects and customer request(s) for quote
• Provide installation, maintenance, and technical service and support on automated machinery at customer sites
• Responsible for the customer site installation and commissioning of equipment, retrofits, service, and preventative maintenance
• Responsible for machine validation at the customer’s facility
• Conduct acceptance testing with customers
• After any equipment has been validated at the customer’s facility, the Field Service Technician will maintain contact with these customers and act as a project manager to the customer until the equipment has been de-commissioned
• Installation and repair of automation equipment that includes pneumatic controls, digital electro-mechanical servo controls, solenoid valves, PC interface controls, and mechanical drives
• Coordinate on-site installation and implementation of new products, add-on products, modifications, and upgrades
• Provide new machine installations and options, machine repair, machine preventive maintenance and machine relocations
• Troubleshooting and repair of mechanical components such as spindle units, gearboxes, and other mechanical machine components
• Conduct emergency and scheduled service calls
• Provide technical support and troubleshooting via phone or on site
• When not at customer locations, Engineers are responsible for platform testing, customer support, and in- house support of other departments
• Ability to read and interpret hydraulic, electrical, mechanical drawings
• Maintenance of a service tool kit and documentation to facilitate rapid customer response
• Store and maintain of a service stock of parts commonly used for repair calls
• Return of defective parts replaced under warranty
• Provide on-the-job training and mentoring to junior Field Service Engineers and customers
• Conduct formal classroom training
• Communicate with the project team to ensure a constant level of project awareness
• Provide informal on-site training to the customer to improve the customers' ability to effectively operate, troubleshoot, and maintain the equipment
• Advises Management regarding customer satisfaction, product performance, and suggestions for product improvement
• Collect data as part of field failure investigations for problems that may be the result of a product design or manufacturing error
• Coordinate with the Documentation Department on a timely basis to ensure that all drawings, manuals, sequence of operation, are kept current and correct
• Ensure that all field operation work and /or upgrade documentation is updated on the network, in the correct project file location(s)
• Timely completion of standard Field Service Reports for each customer call
• Maintain key customer relationships
• Attend technical training classes, as directed by the Service Department Manager and share this knowledge with peers, interns, and/or service technicians
Skills:
• Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering or Technology or a minimum of 5+ years of directly related experience with industrial machines, mechanical maintenance, assemblies, field procedures and field supervision
• Technical field service experience with mechanical, electrical, electronics, pneumatics, hydraulics troubleshooting and repair
• 5+ years of related experience with industrial machines, mechanical maintenance, assemblies, field procedures and field supervision
• 5+ years’ experience as a Field Service Engineer/Technician
• Excellent mechanical skills with knowledge of pneumatic, hydraulic, electronic, and electrical theory
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, electrical schematics, and associated engineering documentation
• Familiarity with CNC, PLCs, and HMIs is a plus
• Strong mechanical/electrical diagnostics, troubleshooting, and repair skills
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Windows OS and Office applications
• Ability to use standard test equipment
• Proficiency in use of precision measuring instruments including electrical metering equipment, multimeters, calipers, gauge pens
• Work with minimal supervision, independently; with the ability to prioritize and organize work to meet deadlines
• Customer focused with excellent communication skills
• Strong interpersonal, verbal and written communications and problem-solving skills
• Ability to communicate and work efficiently in a team environment
• Well-developed interpersonal skills. The majority of work is performed in the presence of customers. The ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing, is essential
• Excellent leadership skills

• Must be a legal US citizen or resident and possess current driver’s license
• Must be able to pass drug screen and criminal background check

• Must be available to conduct at least 50% of their work at remote locations. There must be no restrictions to travel, both locally and globally
