Exciting opportunity exists for the right individual to join a progressive non-profit organization as a Recreation and Outreach Facilitator. The position entails working within Strive Centre’s recreation and outreach team, supporting individuals with Developmental, Concurrent Disorders, FASD, Autism, ABI and mental health issues, in a group and one to one capacity. The successful candidate would share their time between making connections in the community and linking participants to those connections as well as assisting individuals in the community and in their home, to work towards their goals, teaching life skills, community integration and social skills.
The successful candidate possesses excellent interpersonal and organizational skills, establishes and maintains rapport with clients, analyzes and resolves problems, encourages and motivates clients to participate in programs, completes proper documentation of client’s progress, provides personal care on occasion and attend staff meetings.
Shifts are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday 11am to 5:30pm and Thursday 10:30am to 5pm
Job Duties Includes:
• Experience working with and delivering recreation programs for individuals with acquired brain injuries
• Demonstrate effective computer skills
• Ability to act with integrity and trust, helps to build a healthy team environment, communicates clearly, fosters potential in others, and acts as a positive role model.
• Has a broad knowledge of Acquired Brain Injury.
• Demonstrated ability to teach and empower individuals to take responsibility for their own health
• Skill in the use and maintenance of specialized and adaptive equipment.
• Ability to create an atmosphere of support and confidence
• Ability to teach lifeskills in a group setting (between 3-10 individuals)
• Ability to design, Implement and evaluate recreation programs
• Ability to adapt programs to meet individual needs
• Knowledgeable of creating independence vs. creating dependence
• Completing daily documentation on a Microsoft platform database
• Identifying and linking individuals to community resources
• Able to facilitate regular midrange to large scale events for between 4 20 clients
• Community Integration
• Able to set firm boundaries
• Positive can do attitude
• Some behavior management
• Ability to encourage, motivate and involve client in community activities.
• Access to computer and internet
• Proven ability to develop rapport with adults in a variety of contexts.
• Demonstrated ability to work with adults with behavioural, social, emotional and mental health/psychiatric issues
• Experience working with marginalized population
• Ability to communicate effectively (both verbally and in writing) with educational personnel, social workers and resource workers, service providers and partners
• Able to self-start, make judgment calls, and create new models/programs as needed
• Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team environment
• Proven ability to work with minimal supervision
Job Requirements Include:
• Certificate/Diploma or Degree in Therapeutic Recreation from an approved accredited academic institution
• One year of recent, related experience preferred
• Criminal record clearance
• TB test
• Minimum of three (3) references
• Valid BCDL and reliable vehicle to use for work purposes
Additional Requirements:
• Current First Aid CPR Certificate
• Food Safe Certification an asset
• MANDT Certification an asset
Compensation starting at $17.44/hr, plus benefits upon meeting eligibility requirements.
