Job Description

POSITION TITLE: Surgical Nurse Manager
STATUS: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Surgical Services

POSITION SUMMARY
This position is responsible for managing the daily activities of the surgical patient care area, directing and developing staff, collaborating with physicians and other clinic staff as needed to ensure the highest level of patient care. Provide non-judgmental, empathetic, and professional informed consent counseling in a comfortable, unbiased, non-judgmental and confidential setting. This position functions as team lead for surgical nursing staff providing staffing assignments and ensuring the surgical area flows efficiently and effectively according to PPSLRSWMO standards of operation.

PRIMARY DUTIES PERFORMED

• Manages the day-to-day and long-term planning of the surgical patient care area; directing and developing staff; collaborating with physicians and other clinic staff as needed to ensure the highest level of patient care.
• Coordinates staff and directly assists patients seeking abortion, vasectomy, tubal ligation and other GYN services by screening, educating and preparing them for a surgical procedure.
• Provide support to the Director of Surgical Services by representing the surgical activities of the operation to the management team (Nurse Practitioner and Director) to ensure that high quality care is provided, that client flow in the surgical area is effective and efficient, and that staffing and other medical issues are discussed as part of the management team’s standard operating procedure.
• Track, evaluate and make adjustments to Surgical Services Productivity using PPFA productivity standards.
• Support the Director by playing an active role in the hiring, disciplinary and termination functions as related to the surgical line of business.
• Train new or temporary surgical staff as needed.
• Prepare charts and patient for exam and procedures.
• Start IV’s as required for patient sedation and emergencies.
• Assist physician with procedures.
• Facilitate dispensing of medications, birth control and controlled substances as directed by physician.
• Perform and record appropriate lab tests, vital signs and triage abnormal results.
• Package specimens for outside lab transport as needed.
• Assist with recovery room duties, monitoring patients for medical and emotional needs as necessary.
• Evaluate, screen and refer (to physician when appropriate) post-abortion complications including on call availability after hours.
• Follow up with all medical abortion patients per PPSLRSWMO protocols.
• Act as Risk Manager, overseeing risk management protocol including accurate and timely staff training
• Schedule/assign duties according to training/education competency levels within
appropriate scope of practice.
• Educate staff on policies/protocols/procedures and customer service.
• Provide education/in-services on equipment and/or procedures as needed.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by Director of Surgical Services

QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE

Registered Nurse licensed in Missouri with one to two years surgical nursing experience required.
BSN with two years surgical/perioperative nursing experience preferred.
One to two years healthcare management experience desired.
Being also licensed in Illinois a plus
ACLS, CRON, CCRN desired

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
