The Ship Area Manager position is a Senior Level Manufacturing position responsible for leading the execution of production activities for a specific stage of construction (SOC) or dockside ships in our new shipbuilding construction process. The Ship Area Manager is responsible and accountable for cost, productivity and schedule performance in their assigned SOC. The Ship Area Manager is supported by General Foremen and front line Foremen from multiple trades. The Ship Area Manager is responsible for between 100-300 production employees on a daily basis. This position involves frequent and regular interaction with the Manufacturing Senior Leadership team, their direct supervisory team, union personnel, and Human Resources. The Ship Area Manager provides regular status reports, performance metrics and updates on their continuous improvement process efforts to Senior Leadership Team (SLT). This position also involves regular contact with our customer inspection teams, ABS and SUPSHIP, related to compliance with requirements, quality of work, and adherence to schedule. The Ship Area Manager carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with policies and applicable state and federal laws, with strict adherence to all safety and security policies.

The Ship Area Manager assesses progress on production orders and schedules in order to allocate area resources within their SOC. He/she plans production operations, establishes priorities and sequences for manufacturing products with their SOC, prepares operational schedules, and coordinates manufacturing activities (trades) to ensure production and quality of products meet customer specifications. The Ship Area Manager reviews production reports and resolves manufacturing problems to ensure minimum costs and prevent operational delays. He/she develops or revises standard working processes/practices and observes workers to ensure compliance with standards. The Ship Area Manager monitors and reports out on performance metrics to the Directors and Senior Leadership Team (SLT), works with Planning in production control projects to sequence work more effectively, plans overtime for the SOC, and works with General Foremen to assign the resources to support production. He/she also completes Safety Observations periodically, resolves disputes and misunderstandings, and enforces policy and disciplines as appropriate. The Ship Area Manager has a solid understanding of and works within the CBA (Collective Bargaining Agreement) while also working closely with the SOC supervision to assure a uniform understanding.

The Ship Area Manager has a strong focus on safety, completing incident investigations in a timely manner, following up on action items to ensure timely closure, and aiding in the development of new policies and procedures. He/she leads their SOC safety team in completion of JSAs, SOPs, and work place inspections to ensure safe work environment.
He/she must also successfully complete the Supervisory Safety Leadership training and any other EHS training pertaining to the department and/or position. Supervisory responsibilities include assigning and directing work; appraising performance; addressing employee and customer/employee complaints and problem resolution. The Ship Area Manager evaluates skill sets and determines training needs necessary to grow the General Foremen, Foremen and SOC workforce competence levels. He/she challenges General Foremen and Foremen, sets clear performance goals, objectives and expectations, and holds supervisors responsible and accountable for their SOC performance. The Ship Area Manager clears any obstacles that adversely affect performance, productivity and cost. He/she follows all company Work Instructions and (SOP) Standard Operation Procedures, drives LEAN Manufacturing and 5S Principles to improve productivity and performance, and compiles, stores, and retrieves manufacturing data related to quality, cost and schedule for their SOC.

Qualified candidates must have a High School Diploma or equivalent, and at least seven years of trade experience. Four years of management experience is required. Preference is given to those with experience in a manufacturing or shipbuilding environment. Having an Associate Degree or Bachelor Degree is preferred, and experience with systems such as EVMS, Baan, or a Time and Attendance Timekeeping software is also a plus. Candidate must have a working knowledge of Continuous Process Improvement, the ability to read blueprints, strong Microsoft Office Suites computer skills, the ability to maintain a professional demeanor in stressful situations, and the ability to maintain confidentiality.

Candidate must be able to understand the business process, apply resources, assess progress and react in a timely manner to any variations in the process. Additionally, the candidate must have the ability to write reports, interpret business correspondence and procedure manuals, effectively present information, and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers and the general work force. The Ship Area Manager must have the ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists and have the ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Candidate must have strong organizational and time management skills with effective written and verbal communication skills as well.

The Ship Area Manager builds trust and unit cohesion through, honesty, fairness and respect, acting as a strong servant leader to the General Foremen and Foremen reporting to them. He/she must have the ability to lead, direct, coach, and discipline employees in alignment with Company processes, policies, and procedures. The Ship Area Manager inspires enthusiasm and acts as a role model. He/she develops talented employees with the skills, abilities, competencies and values needed to achieve the Company goals, provides timely feedback to employees in a constructive, coaching style, gives praise and recognition routinely, and deals with any performance issues as they arise.
