Position summary of the Speech Pathologist:
The global responsibility of this position and all positions within the Department of Rehabilitation Services is to search for any possible way to improve the comfort and satisfaction of the patients and. As a part of this, all employees are responsible for seeking ways to improve our operations in any way. The speech pathologist evaluates patients and develops a plan of treatment intended to decrease limitations from injury or disease and to maximize swallowing safety, cognition, and communication skills to the extent possible for discharge to the least restrictive environment. The practice of speech pathology requires an in-depth knowledge of human growth and development, human anatomy and physiology, neuroanatomy, neurophysiology, and speech pathology theory. The therapist must be knowledgeable about disease processes and injuries, which impair swallowing function, and communication while considering ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic influences on an individual.
All speech pathology staff participate in the weekend rotation at the acute care hospital working with adults. In-depth acute care clinical training is provided for those clinicians who require refinement of clinical skills in this area.
EDUCATION REQUIRED:
Master's level education or greater in Speech Language Pathology
LICENSE / CERTIFICATION / REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competence, or eligible
Must be licensed or eligible for licensure by the State of Washington
BLS certification required
CONTINUING EDUCATION & COMPETENCY REQUIREMENTS:
Continuing education and/or licensing requirements: Must have have documented continuing education to support continued state licensure (required annually). Must maintain American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) Certificate of Clinical Competence.
Population Specific continuing competency requirements: Must have documentation of continuing education in treatment of each individual age category prior to providing treatment to that age group.
EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
No previous experience required, however, new graduates must have demonstrated internship training in management of swallowing disorders. Will consider applicants who have not earned their certificates of clinical competency provided adequate supervision is available.
