Responsibilities:
DESCRIPTION SUMMARY: Serve as a polymer chemist supporting the scale up and development of water soluble synthetic polymers. Individual will be primarily supporting the generation of (pre-production) materials required for a new custom reagent program. Responsibilities include polymer synthesis, post-modification, documentation and characterization in a dynamic team environment. A significant portion of the laboratory work will be in the post-modification, purification and characterization (physical and optical) of polymers. Individual must be comfortable working in cross-functional teams under defined deadlines. Strong oral and written communication skills are required and experience in writing technical report helpful. The successful candidate will have experience with polymers, organic synthesis, macromolecule separations, and analytical characterization with excellent attention to detail and ability to follow basic SOPs.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
• Scale up and documentation of polymers to support a new custom reagent program
• Perform a variety of polymer processing, purification and characterization steps to support the generation of new polymer materials
• Purify aqueous polymers using common biochemistry techniques (filtration, SEC, etc.)
• Remove solvent via rotary evaporation and/or lyophilisation
• Characterize polymer size by GPC/SEC chromatography using established SOP
• Perform small scale dye labeling reactions according to established SOP
• Perform established reactions to convert/activate functional groups on final polymers
• Optical characterization of the polymer dyes including measurement of absorbance and fluorescence emission spectra.
• Characterization of polymers by HPLC/FPLC using established SOP
• Accurately dispense materials into standard packaging under inert conditions
• Preparation of outgoing materials and supporting (QC) documentation
• Provide assistance as needed to maintain functioning laboratory; including glassware cleaning, material ordering, inventory control and other duties.
• Support documentation of R&D results in company databases.
