The Marriott International HQ located at 10400 Fernwood Road, Bethesda, MD, 20817 is currently hiring a Archivist.
Responsibilities include: The mission of the Corporate Archives is to collect, preserve and promote the rich legacy of Marriott International’s enterprises, values, and culture of Marriott. It is the single and primary source for Marriott’s current and future stakeholders seeking information and resources about the Company’s history, legacy, past enterprises, and practices.
The Corporate Archivist for Marriott International is responsible for developing and executing long-range plans for the Corporate Archives to enable associates and executives to leverage Marriott International’s historical resources in furthering Marriott’s business objectives. This position is responsible for the daily upkeep of the Archives, implementation of a system to retrieve and maintain the assets, secure new assets as appropriate, and ensure that assets are protected, maintained, and assessable for current and future use.
This position reports to the Senior Manager, Culture and may have one or more direct reports.
Job Summary
Specific job duties for the Corporate Archivist include:
• Create policies, standards, and procedures that support the maintenance, retrieval, and preservation of current assets and the process for securing additional assets;
• Implement appropriate systems and organize all materials for easier access on-site and online in such a way that they meet professional archival standards and the needs of Marriott International.
• Create, maintain or enhance tools (such as inventories and databases) that provide a variety of points of access to the contents of the Archives and promote intellectual control over the materials.
• Ensure the long-term viability of the Archives’ holdings, which include paper, digital records, audio-visual materials, and product samples by:
•
• Evaluating the condition of records to determine preservation strategies including housing, reformatting, data migration and contracted conservation.
• Implementing preservation priorities.
• Maintaining environmental controls consistent with professional standards.
• Securing records against damage and los, and
• Preparing and implement disaster prevention response and recovery plan.
• Continual review of a wide range of media and materials for the purpose of assessing their appropriateness for inclusion in the Archives, including:
• Identifying corporate records of potential permanent value for archival acquisition.
• Evaluating groups of records for permanent retention.
• Determining access restrictions to records and record groups as appropriate.
• Controlling acquisitions of archival records through formalized documentation consistent with professional standards.
• Upon request, produce products (such as exhibits, brochures, talks, tours and websites) that use the contents of the Archives to tell a story, celebrate an event, or support a key corporate activity. At times, may need to support special initiative to promote use of the Archives or an understanding of its content and value.
• Process internal and external requests and, when appropriate, conduct research on behalf of individuals needing information from the Archives.

• Determine scope of stakeholder needs.
• Develop reference and collection access policies and procedures to best serve the organization.
• Create an efficient system to process, log and follow up on requests
• Uphold Professional, Legal and Ethical Responsibilities including:
• Compliance with internal and external regulations as they pertain to Corporate Archives and holdings and Marriott International policies
• Professional archival standards.
• Professional activities for continuing education and raising the profile of Marriott International Corporate Archives in archival community.
• Working with the Senior Manager, Culture, oversee Archives budget and ensure appropriate policies and guidelines are adhered as it relates to the budget.
Candidate Profile
• Successful candidates should possess knowledge and experience as follows:
• Bachelors degree of Library Science (or equivalent) with specialized coursework in archival management from an ALA accredited library school. Additional graduate degree(s) in related field (history, business, hospitality) and / or Academy of Certified Archivists (ACA) certification a plus.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in special collections, including processing and producing finding aids for archival collections of significant size.
• Demonstrated knowledge of proper methods for handling, storing, and preserving modern archival collections, including selection and/or fabrication of appropriate enclosures.
• Demonstrated knowledge of appraising, arranging, and describing modern archival collections.
• Excellent organizational and project management skills.
• Demonstrated knowledge of key issues and current trends in special collections, including the systematic integration of born-digital records from a wide variety of media into overall collection development strategies.
• Demonstrated knowledge of, and receptiveness to, the uses of emerging technologies in archival and special collections.
• Excellent written communication skills and demonstrated ability to develop written project documentation, process procedures, reports, etc.
• Ability to manage multiple projects, balance priorities and deadlines, with a variety of coworkers and target audiences.
• Excellent spoken communication skills, specifically to interact effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and to effectively present information in group settings.
