The clinical nurse specialist demonstrates expertise in a specific area of clinical nursing with a focus on a selected patient population. The scope of practice encompasses the incorporation of ethics in the nursing process during consultation, practice and application of research and education.
The Clinical Nurse Specialist works under the direction of the Director of Professional Services as a leader, innovator and change agent in the pursuit of improved nursing practice and quality
patient care. The clinical nurse specialist at Medical Center will assist physicians, nurses and other appropriate health professionals in coordinating the process of assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation and delivery of services through management of patient care based evidence and standards of care.
This is achieved through collaboration with physicians and a multidisciplinary team to enhance delivery of cost-effective, outcome-oriented quality care. The Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide
these services in a culturally sensitive manner to a select patient population throughout the continuum of care. The Clinical Nurse Specialist will demonstrate knowledge of human growth and development, will gather and interpret appropriate information to identify each patient's requirements relative to his/her age-specific needs and will coordinate evidenced based care needed as directed in the policies and procedures of the units/areas/departments. The Clinical Nurse Specialist will get goals annually and will perform self-evaluation based on the goals set.
MINIMUM EDUCATION: Master's of Science with an expertise in the area of his/her nursing specialty. Certified within their specialty and meets the requirements of the accepted certifications as listed in the Rules and Regulation for the Advanced Practice Nursing Act.
MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: Three years of nursing with demonstrated competence or interest in commitment to developing an expertise in assessment and treatment related modalities. Demonstrates leadership skills, strong organizational skills, strong interpersonal communication skills and counseling techniques.
EXPERIENCE: Two or more years of experience as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. REQUIRED
CERTIFICATION/ REGISTRATION: Healthcare Provider CPR completed prior to employment. Specialty certification and APN licensure required to be achieved within first year of employment. Once APN licensure is achieved, collaborative agreement must be obtained with physician, preferably in area of nursing expertise. Current membership in professional organization in area of specialty required.
