POSITION TITLE: Client Advocate
EFFECTIVE DATE: 2015

PROGRAM: Domestic Violence Shelter Services
REPORTS TO: Advocate Services Mgr.

FACILITY: DVS Sebring Safe House
CITY: Sebring

JOB STATUS: Permanent Hourly PRN (as needed)
FLSA: Non Exempt

Job Summary:
This is a non-degreed position that will require the employee to provide oversight and manage the schedules of participants at the shelter. Assist with facilitating self-help groups within the Shelter and the community. Complete intake paperwork and service documentation for victims of domestic violence who enter the Shelter. Comply with all nutritional Grant program Requirements that include: ensuring food is available per menu, food is set out at appropriate times; accurate documentation is completed immediately. Provide transportation for shelter participants, as needed.

Essential Duties/Requirements/Activities:
• An employee in this position must be able to react to change productively.
• Provide oversight and manage the schedules of participants.
• Provide for the special needs of the participants at the Shelter.
• Must learn, understand and carry out all Domestic Violence Program Procedures
• Know, understand and respect participants’ rights.
• Complete intake paperwork and service documentation for victims of domestic violence who enter the Shelter.
• Read Communication Log and Residents Board at the beginning of each shift.
• Communicate with off-going shift regarding clients and the facility at the beginning of each shift.
• Document in client’s chart regarding groups, progress notes, outings and incidents.
• Complete required PRC paperwork as it pertains to assigned shift and/or job duties in a timely manner.
• Provide information, referral and counseling to victims of domestic violence, regardless of gender or disabilities and the general public.
• Assist shelter participants with the completion of service and safety plans, especially related to gender or disabilities.
• Provide transportation for shelter participants, as needed.
• Transport incoming victims from designated safe place (i.e., police station) to Shelter.
• Provide shift coverage at the Lakeland Domestic Violence Shelter, as needed.
• Document daily activities for your supervisor and turn in monthly.
• Provide phone crisis counseling as trained, pertaining to sexual and domestic violence victim callers.
• Provide support to other staff and participants with the dynamics of gender specific or disabled participants.
• Attend monthly staff meetings facilitated by the Advocate Services Manager or Program Director.
• Provide presentations and training within the community.
• Comply with all nutritional Grant program Requirements that include: ensuring food is available per menu, food is set out at appropriate times; accurate documentation is completed immediately.

Qualifications:

Education:
High School diploma required.

Experience:
Preferred a minimum of one year working with individuals or families in crisis

Certifications:

Training:
24 30 hours of professional enhancement training as required by FCADV and 24-30 hours of professional enhancement training as required by FCASV.
24 hours of training as required by PRC.

Knowledge and Skills:
May require scheduling and accompanying participants for appointments, documentation and referrals.
Will require inter-personal/inter-agency skills.
Ability to work well with others.
Good organizational skills.
Good oral and written communication skills.
Ability to intervene with and redirect agitated clients.
May require public speaking. May require facilitating groups and the required documentation attached.
Ability to self-motivate and self-start.
Working knowledge of community resources especially in areas of housing, training and employment.

Safety Equipment

Comply with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) rules and regulations
Life Safety Equipment (fire extinguisher)

Transportation:
Must have reliable transportation
Must be a least 25 years of age for designated driver requirements.
Clean driving record required. DMV license check performed upon date of hire.

Work Environment:
May present exposure to adverse working conditions due to people who are mentally ill, who may be psychotic, who may present some exposure to communicable diseases, be verbally abusive or present a threat of violence,
[or those who have been traumatized due to domestic or sexual violence]
Office Environment
Shift assignment will be flexible with occasional evening and weekend work required and occasional need to fill in on other shifts due to vacancies, illnesses and vacations.
