Job Description:
Incumbent serves as the Indiana Veterans' Home and State liaison with supporting Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs). The incumbent coordinates VSO volunteer support programs with the Indiana Veterans' Home Community Volunteer Program Coordinator and activities with the Recreation Director. The incumbent also develops and maintains programs of community education and public relations to promote a better understanding of Veterans and their long-term care quality of life needs. Actively solicits funds and other donations to support IVH programs and Resident needs. Reports to the Superintendent.
Responsibilities:
• Serves as a liaison between IVH and the VSOs and maintains positive, profitable working relationships; while also striving to increase the base and involvement of additional VSOs;
• Clearly articulates how residents' needs may be met by the involvement of the VSOs through providing donations (e.g., making funding available for major purchases such as beds designed for larger residents) or volunteering to sponsor activities/events (e.g., cookouts or trips);
• Utilizes tact, diplomacy, and influence in communications representatives/officials of local community/State VSOs when soliciting their funding and involvement;
• Works collaboratively with other IVH staff (e.g., Nursing, Social Service to identify resident needs that can best be met through the resources of these organizations;
• Carries out cooperative and consultative services with community groups, such as serving on agency boards of directors and interagency committees;
• Ensures timely and appropriate acknowledgement of contributions and formally recognizes contributors;
• Initiates periodic evaluation of services;
• Attends functions conducted in the evenings, weekends and holidays at IVH or elsewhere in Indiana as required;
• Speaks to community organizations about IVH and provided services;
• Assists Admissions and Marketing staff in their drive to increase the census at IVH;
• Supports annual recognition program for volunteers and IVH staff;
• Completes other projects and/or duties/responsibilities as assigned.
Preferred Experience:
• Thorough knowledge of the existence, functions, procedures/protocols, and organization of the VSOs;
• Specialized knowledge of and ability to forecast the needs of the residents that may be met through the assistance of the VSOs;
• Working knowledge of the policies and procedures of IVH;
• Excellent oral and written communication skills;
• Exceptional skills in persuading and influencing others;
• Strong organizational and time management skills;
• Ability to develop and sustain productive working relationships with representatives of other State agencies, State and local officials, IVH staff, residents, and families;
• Ability to demonstrate innovative and effective community relations strategies including; education, communication, potential services, and benefits of collaboration;
• Ability to establish and maintain effective and profitable relationships with federal, State, and local VSO leaders and members;
• Ability to effectively manage multiple projects/assignments/initiatives simultaneously;
• Ability to demonstrate proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
